The EU allocates €12m grant for North-South Road Corridor

In improving its road connectivity with the wider Caucasus region, Armenia took another important step on 17 June 2016.Thanks to EU financing (an EU grant and a European Investment Bank (EIB) concessional loan), works on the construction of the Lanjik-Gyumri section of the “North-South Road Corridor Investment Programme” have begun to be implemented by a Chinese construction company. This will allow it to attract foreign investment and provide further opportunities for employment and growth in the regions. Reminiscing about its role at the time of the ancient Silk Road, today Armenia reiterates its position as a connector between the peoples of Asia and Europe. Sections of the Talin-Lanjik and Lanjik-Gyumri road, covered by Tranche 3 of the “North-South Road Corridor Investment Programme”, have been co-financed by the Asian Development Bank and the EIB. For the construction of these sections, the European Union has also allocated a €12m grant to the Government of Armenia. The construction of this road will activate transport links and increase trade between communities. Moreover, it will also integrate Armenia into regional road networks, thus contributing to economic and trade cooperation.
ARS_8862The Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, spoke about the importance of the programme, congratulating everybody involved with the start of Tranche 3: ‘Armenia is a beautiful country, but it needs good roads. Good roads are not only necessary for ordinary people to travel better, faster and safer – good roads are a necessary ingredient for sustainable development, greater provincial development, and new foreign investment. The EU is very happy to support the construction of this road in Armenia. The presence of the Chinese Ambassador to Armenia today is very symbolic, it helps us to understand the crucial role of Armenia as a crossing point, as a very important link between Europe and Asia. Just a few kilometres away from here is a Caravanserai, built in the days of the Silk Road. Armenia was a link between Asia and Europe a thousand years ago, and this road has a strategic importance’.
Arthur Sargsyan, CEO of the North-South Investment Programme Implementation Organisation, congratulated everybody on behalf of the Armenian Minister for Transport and Communications, Gagik Beglaryan: ‘This project is part of the ideological structure of both the TRACECA and Silk Road programmes. We anticipate rebuilding the 560km route, starting from the southern border with Iran, extending to the northern Georgian borderline; we aim to complete 470km by the end of this project. This project will have impact on the speed limit of the motorway, increasing the existing speed limit from 40-60km/h to 110-120km/h. It will be possible to halve the time needed to travel from the Iranian to the Georgian border, from 9.5-10 hours to 4.5 hours. This provides great opportunities for cargo and large transport companies to take the north-south road as a preferable transit route’.
The symbolic laying of the initial road base was done by Ambassador Świtalski, Minister Beglaryan and the Chinese Ambassador to Armenia, Tian Erlong.
