Every year, on 9 May, Europe celebrates Europe Day: the celebration of peace and unity. 9 May marks the anniversary of the historical ‘Schuman deceleration’ and EU institutions celebrate by opening their doors to the public in early May in Brussels and Strasbourg. Local EU offices in Europe and all over the world organise a variety of events, giving the opportunity to thousands of people to take part in visits, debates, concerts and other events and raise awareness about the EU.
The EU Delegation to Armenia also joins these celebrations. This year the Europe Day celebrations are entitled ‘The European Union for Armenia’ and will be held in seven different cities. The concluding celebration will be held in Yerevan. These celebrations will present EU-supported projects in Armenia, developments in the EU-Armenia relationship, as well as European values and culture, with a particular focus on youth.

ARS_5343On 6 May, Europe Day celebrations were officially launched. In the morning, Serzh Sargsyan, the Armenian President, visited the EU Delegation to Armenia and congratulated its staff on the occasion of Europe Day. President Sargsyan held a meeting with the Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, during which they discussed EU-Armenia relations and cooperation.

ARS_5444After the official meeting, cultural celebrations began with the “Europe for Peace” concert of classical concert. The Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra performed alongside the “Children of Armenia” Choir and students from art schools across the country. Prior to the concert, pupils of different art schools of Armenian marzes had created paintings associated which used Europe and peace as their inspiration. Selected paintings from 98 art schools were exhibited in the lobby of Aram Khachaturian concert hall for three days as well as were later screened during the concert. Ambassador Piotr Świtalski and Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian also attended the concert.

ARS_5616The Ambassador Świtalski made his Europe Day opening speech in Armenian: ‘Europe Day is about peace, freedom, solidarity, and justice. Europe and Armenia are linked closely; this celebration is joint. The European Union will continue to act in Armenia so that Armenians can benefit. I want to use this opportunity to thank all our partners for working together with us. Finally I want to thank the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra for organising this wonderful concert and the Armenian children for attending’.

ARS_5634Minister Nalbandian praised the EU-Armenia relationship: ‘Since independence, Armenia has built strong relations with the EU based on efficient cooperation and mutual respect. With EU assistance we have implemented reforms in a number of sectors, most notably in public administration, justice, the electoral system, and many others. These strengthen the fundamental freedoms and welfare of our society. Many joint programmes are still being implemented, and many will be implemented in the future. After the victory over Nazism in the Second World War, Europe has become characterised by peace, solidarity and sustainable development. Europe Day signifies this high value system and we are paying tribute’.
After the concert the painters of the selected works received certificates and symbolic gifts from the EU Delegation.
On 8 May, within the framework of Europe Day celebrations in Armenia, “I meet with the European Ambassadors” event took place. Armenian youth had the opportunity to meet and discuss different topics with European Ambassadors.
