The “Food Female Hero 2015” national award ceremony took place on 6 March 2015 in the Armenia Mariott Hotel in Yerevan. This was the fifth time the award ceremony has been held, the aim of which is to support successful women in agriculture who have registered positive results in their work and are promoting sustainable development within their communities. The event was organised within the framework of the “Improving Regional Food Security in the South Caucasus through National Strategies and Smallholder Production” project, which is financed by the European Union.ARS_3012
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Makaryan emphasised the role of women in agriculture: ‘We are very happy to see that there are women here from almost all the different marzes. We believe that you make an enormous input into the development of the Armenian economy’.
John Barker, the International Aid/Cooperation Officer of the EU Delegation to Armenia, spoke about rural development and the EU: ‘Promoting opportunities for rural development is a key priority for the EU here in Armenia. We are working towards food security and women’s empowerment. The European Union, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, is always ready to support agricultural and rural development in Armenia’.ARS_3024
Oxfam in Armenia Country Director Margarita Hakobyan congratulated all the nominated women and talked about women’s role in agriculture: ‘We are happy that this award has become a tradition and we dedicate this one to food security. It is obvious that women have a huge impact on the food security, as well as agriculture globally. This event is not just an award, but a way to encourage women. Women from eight Armenian marzes have been nominated for this award; this event is particularly significant as Syrian Armenian women have been involved this year’.
Nominees received diplomas as well as gifts during the award ceremony. Parallel to the event, an exhibition and food tasting was organised by participating women.
