Philippe Lefort: “The South Caucasus is an important region for the EU”

Philippe Lefort and Edward NalbandianOn 7 September the EUSR for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Philippe Lefort visited Armenia. Lefort started his duties on 1 September and came to Yerevan as a part of his first visit to the region.
During a press conference with Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian, Lefort mentioned that the South Caucasus had great potential for further development thanks to its economic and cultural strength. He also reconfirmedEU support for the establishment of peace and stability in the region. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remained one of the main topics for future discussions. Lefort highlighted the need for a peaceful negotiation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan emphasising the importance of the OSCE Minsk Group. Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian stressed Armenia also wished to reach a peaceful settlement.
