On 22 October, the “Frontiers in Chemistry” (ArmChemFront2018) international conference was launched in Armenia. With the support of the European Union Delegation to Armenia, Groningen University in partnership with Yerevan State University, organised this large-scale scientific conference on a variety of topics in the field of chemistry, selecting world-renowned speakers, including 2 Nobel Prize winners and EU’s “Horizon2020″ participants. During the 5-day conference, speakers shared news on recent scientific developments. More than hundred scientists from all over the world took part in the conference.

ARS_9617The main goal of the symposium was to provide Armenian scientists, especially the younger generation, with an opportunity to learn about best practice, using innovative and quality techniques. The core message of the conference was to reenergise chemical research in Armenia, tailored to the specific requirements and conditions of Armenia and in line with global scientific achievements. At the end of the conference, “The Best Talent” scholarship award took place. An international panel of scientists selected the brightest Armenian talent. The latter got an opportunity to do a 3-month internship at one of the top chemistry research groups in the world.

ARS_9639The Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, welcomed the participants of the conference: “We have a big delegation encompassing more than 20 countries. For the EU, this is an occasion to launch our campaign –#LearningIsCool. We know Armenians have a high IQ, this is a nation of talented people. However, high IQ is only 50-60 percent of the recipe for success. What you need is good education. Education is important for Armenia as a driver of change. We, the EU, are ready to assist our Armenian partners. International links are also key – this is why this conference is so important. Armenia is an associate member of “Horizon2020″ – a great platform for supporting innovation and research in Europe and our partner countries. We are looking forward to successful applications and good projects from Armenia”.

ARS_9653Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia noted that chemistry was important for Armenia: “Our country was a centre of chemical industry for many years with many specialisations. As a result of the collapse of economic relations after independence, the chemistry sector in Armenia suffered greatly. We need to give it a new impetus. The Armenian Government has ambitious plans for education and science sector. In recent months we have tried to develop different projects, and in some places we have already started to implement them. Holding such important conferences, especially in the chemistry sphere, is vitally important for Armenia. It is impossible to develop any sphere, especially the chemistry sphere, without international cooperation and without taking into account the international achievements and experience of contemporary science”.
